Electric Car with V2G (Vehicle to Grid) Controls
With V2G technology, electric vehicles and plug in hybrids can become part of the power grid. Energy storage in the neighborhoods can help stabilize the gird and improve utility operation. The university of Delaware has done some pioneering work in this area, using a Viper computer from Eurotech.

Photo taken during the first experiment controlling vehicle power by an ISOs regulation signal. Present were (L to R): Willett Kempton, Len Beck, Doug Brunner, Ken Huber, Victor Udo, Kevin Komara, and Mark Holman, as well as Jackie Piero (taking photograph).

Here you can see how the vehicle battery can be charged at variable rates, and can even discharge back to the grid to smooth grid power. For a full technical whitepaper on the topic of V2G power, click here |
